The Mathematics Education Bachelor of Science (Teacher Licensure) follows the guidelines of the National Council of Teacher of Mathematics for undergraduate programs for teachers of mathematics and fulfills the requirements set forth by Minnesota’s Professional Education Licensing and Standards Board.
Our program includes faculty who are former K-12 mathematics educators dedicated to ensuring that our students gain the skills to become successful teachers of mathematics. Unique attributes of our program:
- Opportunities to interact closely with faculty on research and professional presentations;
- Additional coursework related to developing mathematical ideas in the K-12 classroom;
- Opportunities to work as a tutor in the Math Help Room where you can practice tutoring mathematics;
- Emphases on both mathematical content and best practices teaching pedagogy;
- Connections to recent graduates through coursework and practicum experiences.
The Mathematics Education program also provides a strong mathematical background for students to become well rounded experts in the realm of mathematics and statistics. Upon completion of this program, students will be fully prepared for teaching licensure in grades five through twelve.

Degrees in Action
Math education majors from Bemidji State go on to do some incredible things with their degrees.
“I graduated from BSU in 2018 with a degree in Mathematics and a degree in Mathematics Education. Since then, I have worked at Preble High School in Green Bay and I now work at Lincoln High School in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. This year I am teaching Algebra 2 and a class called Math Applications (where we cover Algebra and Geometry topics and focus on how to apply them to real life situations.) I am also working on getting my Masters in Math Education through UW-River Falls so I can hopefully teach dual credit courses in the future. I like to thank all the Math professors that I had while at Bemidji State University. I feel like I was really prepared for teaching because of the opportunities that I had at Bemidji State. I felt like they took very good care of me, especially since my family was so far away. I will forever be appreciative of my experience at BSU, I think of them often, and I miss them. ”

“My name is Anna Kahlstorf! I graduated from Bemidji State University with a Bachelor’s degree with a double major in Mathematics and Mathematics Education in the Spring of 2023. While at BSU, I was a Noyce Scholar through the Math Teacher Preparation Scholarship. Through my experiences with them, I felt prepared to become a classroom teacher, and I learned how to incorporate Social Emotional Learning skills into my teaching. I currently work as the middle school math teacher for Schoolcraft Learning Community. I teach 6th grade math, 7th grade Pre-Algebra, and 8th grade Algebra. SLC is a friendly and welcoming Crew and strives to give students real world and hands-on experiences. The students are incredibly fun and energetic, and thanks to my professors and scholarships, I am prepared to teach engaging math lessons in the classroom!”
